Visual Storytelling: Emotion, Figure, and Space
with Nick Austin
Ages: 13 - 18
This six-week painting course explores how narrative can be built through the relationship between figure, environment, and color.
Working in acrylic or oil, students will develop one narrative painting from concept to completion, beginning with brainstorming personal or imagined stories and translating them into visual form through thumbnail sketches and compositional planning.
As the course progresses, students will focus on blocking in figures and spaces, using gesture and body language to clarify meaning, and exploring how color, limited palettes, and atmosphere can communicate emotion.
The final weeks emphasize refinement, symbolism, and visual cohesion, culminating in a group critique centered on storytelling, emotional readability, and narrative impact.
All supplies will be provided via the supply fee.

Quiet Spaces: Painting Personal Moments
with Nick Austin
Ages: 13 - 18
This class invites students to paint intimate scenes inspired by memory, relationships, and everyday life, with an emphasis on mood and emotional clarity over technical precision.
Working in acrylic, students will translate personal moments into visual scenes through thoughtful composition, cropping, and simplified forms. The course explores how interiors and personal spaces can act as emotional containers, and how color, atmosphere, and figure/environment relationships contribute to meaning.
Students will develop one or two small-scale paintings over the course of the class, refining cohesion and narrative focus, and will conclude with a supportive group critique centered on emotional resonance and visual connotation.
All supplies will be provided via the supply fee.

with Lydia Bratton

Using your own smartphone or digital camera, you’ll hunt for inspiration in everything from rusted textures to blooming nature. Back in the lab, your digital device is just the beginning; you'll learn to transfer your images to the desktop and use Krita’s professional-grade tools to deconstruct and reimagine your shots.
Whether you are crafting surrealist dreamscapes, painterly portraits, or bold “glitch” art, this week is about total creative independence and mastering the modern alchemy of digital expression. Capture the world in all its details; then, entirely on your own canvas.

Figures in Motion: Sculpting Animals and Anatomy
with Lydia Bratton
Ages: 13 - 18
Unlock the secrets of professional sculpture in this intensive, one-week studio!
Figures in Motion moves beyond basic clay modeling to teach the “inside-out” method used by master sculptors. Students will learn to engineer custom wire armatures-internal skeletons that provide the strength and balance needed for dynamic, gravity-defying poses.
Whether your interest lies in wildlife, human anatomy, or character design, this class provides the technical foundation to bring your vision to life.
With three hours of daily studio time, students will have the “creative breathing room” to focus on anatomical accuracy, structural engineering, and fine surface textures. The workshop is designed to support individual goals, allowing students to work at their own pace to produce a portfolio of work or a single, highly refined sculpture.
