Journey to Drawing: Make Your Point
with Michele Frantz
Whether you are a beginning artist or just want to improve your skills, these classes will explore the basis of all art...drawing!
This series is designed to identify fundamental drawing skills that the participants can take and develop further on their own. Participants can take one or several sessions; each session will introduce a different aspect of drawing, such as gesture, line, shading, proportions, etc.
Make Your Point
In this class you will take your art to the next level by exploring the elements of compostition such as unity, contrast, movement, etc. This class is recommended for students who have at least some experience with their chosen medium. Students may work in either black and white or color drawing mediums.

Watercolor and Ink Illustration
with Mike Flynn
Mixing mediums can be a great way to achieve unique effects!
In this exciting course, instructor Mike Flynn will guide you through the use of both watercolors and ink to create astonishing renderings of the world around you.
This class will explore several illustrations of various landscape, seascape, and cityscape designs using well-known locations.
Watercolor paper will be provided via the supply fee, but all other supplies are not included. A list of supplies can be found here. Some watercolor experience is helpful, but no required, for this class!
Please note that there will be no class on June 25th!

For the Birds
with Michele Frantz
Learn how to turn our fine feathered friends into treasured works of art! From anatomy to perspective, Michele will walk you through her tips and tricks for making your avian art come to life.
Students may work in any media, and will learn simple but effective techniques for capturing the beauty and spirit of birds and their environment.
This class is appropriate for students of all levels. Please note that students must bring all their own materials. No materials will be provided by the instructor.
Photos will be provided, but students are more than welcome to bring their own!

Sticker Design and Creation: From Concept to Print
with Jonathan Flanders
Ready to turn your ideas into custom stickers? In this fun, hands-on 1-day workshop, you’ll learn how to design and create your own stickers from start to finish — all from home.
You’ll learn how to create bold, eye-catching designs, that really make your stickers pop!
You’ll also discover two easy ways to make your stickers: how to create them without a cutting machine, and how to use a cutting machine for a more polished, professional look.
By the end of the class, you’ll have the skills and confidence to design, print, and create stickers for fun, gifts, or even to grow your own brand.
All supplies provided via the supply fee.

Fragments of Memory: Painting Personal Experiences

2026 is the year to give back to yourself, and there's no better place to start than this installment in our ARTful Wellness series, brought to you by UVA Health!
Join us for an exploration of personal memory through painting and visual storytelling. Participants will recall meaningful moments and translate them into works of art using color, composition, and abstraction.
This workshop emphasizes emotional expression, reflection, and process over technical accuracy. Artists of all levels are welcome to join.

Journey to Composition: Into the Light

Join us for an introduction to creating the illusion of atmosphere and depth in interiors and still life art!
Learn how light and shadow affects how we perceive objects in a limited space, such as a room or a tabletop, and how it differs from achieving depth in landscape art.
Students will come away with an understanding of the role of color, value, edges and contrast, and how to use them to improve their art.Students may work in any media. Students must bring their own supplies! Michele will provide reference photos, or students may use their own.

Wild, Wonderful Watercolor Pencils!
with Valerie Larson
Have fun exploring the many different techniques one can use with watercolor pencils!
Watercolor pencils are a versatile medium because they can be used dry for colored-pencil effects, partially diluted, or completely diluted. These pencils are fun to use and can create smooth or textured artwork, and they’re a great way to become more comfortable with watercolor as a painting medium!
Accomplished artist Valerie Larson will be presenting examples of her own watercolor-pencil paintings, showcasing various techniques she uses. These techniques include mixing colors, creating paper palettes, and much more.
Students can bring their own photo for painting inspiration or follow along with the one provided. You will also be working on Aquabord, a clay-like surface made for watercolors.

Exploring Composition: A Formal Affair
with Michele Frantz
The crucial role of composition in art is to establish balance and harmony in one’s artwork, while at the same time effectively using contrast to provide interest.
In these classes, students will explore a variety of compositional formats, such as triangles and spirals, and learn how to use visual elements such as line, color, texture and space to make these formats work.Some previous experience with your chosen media is recommended, since the emphasis will be on design rather than technique.
The instructor will supply reference photos, but students are also welcome to bring their own. Students may work in any media; no supplies provided.
